How this calculator estimates adult weight
There is no formula that can turn one weigh-in into an exact adult weight — anyone who claims otherwise is selling confidence, not accuracy. What does exist is a pair of long-used rules of thumb that, taken together, bracket a plausible range. This tool shows you both, labels each one, and combines them into a single honest band.
Method A: the growth-fraction method
Puppies reach a roughly predictable percentage of their adult weight at each age, and that percentage depends heavily on breed size. A toy breed at 16 weeks is already around 60% of its adult weight; a giant breed at the same age is barely at 31%, because giant breeds keep growing for up to two years while toys finish in under one. Divide the current weight by the fraction for the puppy's age and size class, and you get an adult estimate. We apply a ±15% band to the fraction because the underlying percentages are approximations compiled from commonly published growth guides — not laws of nature.
Method B: the simple linear rule
The internet's favorite shortcut: (current weight ÷ age in weeks) × 52. It assumes every dog grows at a constant average rate and finishes at exactly one year. Both assumptions are wrong in instructive ways: growth is front-loaded (fast early, slow late), so the rule overshoots for breeds that finish early — toys especially — and it is least accurate for large and giant breeds, which are nowhere near done at 52 weeks. We show it because you will meet it everywhere, and seeing it next to Method A teaches you more than hiding it would. Past 26 weeks it degenerates toward the current weight, so we stop folding it into the combined range; past 52 weeks we stop showing it entirely.

Three worked examples
A medium mixed-breed puppy: 4 kg at 14 weeks
At 14 weeks a medium-class puppy sits around 40% of adult weight, so Method A gives 4 ÷ 0.40 ≈ 10 kg, or 9–12 kg with the ±15% band. The linear rule says 4 ÷ 14 × 52 ≈ 15 kg — noticeably higher, because it assumes this half-grown puppy keeps gaining at its early-puppyhood rate for another nine months. Combined range: 9–15 kg (19–33 lb). A sensible plan: buy the crate for a ~12 kg dog, not a 15 kg one.
A Labrador puppy: 10 kg at 16 weeks
Large-class puppies are around 38% grown at 16 weeks, so Method A gives 10 ÷ 0.38 ≈ 26 kg, banded to 23–31 kg. The linear rule lands at 33 kg. Combined: 23–33 kg (50–72 lb) — which straddles the Labrador breed-standard adult range nicely. A toy puppy: 1.1 kg at 12 weeks
Toy breeds are already ~45% grown at 12 weeks, so Method A gives 1.1 ÷ 0.45 ≈ 2.4 kg, banded to 2.1–2.9 kg. The linear rule claims 4.8 kg — roughly double, and a textbook demonstration of why that rule misleads for early-maturing breeds. If someone quotes you the linear number for a Chihuahua, now you know what went wrong. Combined range: 2.1–4.8 kg (5–11 lb), with the truth almost certainly near the bottom of it.

- Buying the right crate, harness and bed once instead of three times — gear is sized by adult weight.
- Choosing food and portions. Large-breed puppy formulas differ from regular ones, and feeding guides are organised by expected adult weight.
- Estimating adult size of a rescue puppy whose parentage is unknown — run two plausible size classes and take the union.
- Sanity-checking a breeder's or shelter's size claim. If a "miniature" puppy is 6 kg at 12 weeks, the math disagrees.
- Budgeting. Insurance, medication doses and boarding fees often scale with weight.
What this calculator cannot tell you
It cannot tell you whether your puppy is healthy, whether it is growing "correctly", or what it should weigh today — those are questions about an individual dog, and they belong to your veterinarian, who can see the animal. Genetics within a litter, diet, neutering timing and illness all move real growth away from any table. Treat every number on this site as an estimate to plan around, not a target to feed toward: overfeeding a puppy to "catch up" to a chart is actively harmful advice that no calculator should ever imply.
